Time to support your local yarn shop

A good yarn shop is a fabulous thing. Some of us seek them out wherever we go in the UK or abroad.

Beautifully displayed yarn, informed and informative staff (when travelling they can be a great resource on local yarn) a chance to see new patterns that might otherwise pass us by, and other knitters and crocheters – what could be better.

So, we are looking forward to the return of Yarn Shop Day on Saturday 27 April which celebrates all that is great about yarn stores.

Bricks and mortar yarn shops across the UK and Ireland will be hosting special events, giving away goodie bags and offering special discounts – along with plenty of tea and cake – all to celebrate yarn stores and attract customers in. Look out for yarn tasting events, workshops and designer visits.

Participating shops will also have exclusive free patterns for the Yarn Shop Day mascots which this year are the Tiny Turtle Knitted Family, designed by Sachiyo Ishii, and Bubbles The Crocheted Whale, designed by Sarah Jane Hicks. Look out for an exclusive blanket pattern as well.

Yarn Shop Day was launched in 2014 by Let’s Knit and Let’s Get Crafting, magazines. Last year over 200 shops took part. Let’s Knit editor Sarah Neal says: “Yarn shops are not just somewhere to buy needles and wool – they are often the hub of the local crafting community and offer advice, inspiration and a place to meet like-minded people. Our campaign aims to highlight the fantastic service they provide, and also create a day of festivities and fun that celebrates all that’s great about a local yarn shop. For crafters everywhere it’s the perfect day to go along and support your local participating store.”
